English
English is the key learning area where students develop knowledge, skills and understandings about English Language and literature. It also has a wider role as a means of learning in all Key Learning Areas.
English provides students with the learning experiences to:
- Develop the ability to talk, listen, read, view and write with purpose, effect and confidence.
- Develop knowledge, skills and understanding about the English language and literature.
- Develop understandings about the world and ourselves.
- Create and interpret a range of literacy and factual texts.
- Learn about the structure and grammar of these texts.
- Develop critical literacy skills by questioning, challenging and evaluating texts through strands of talking, and listening, reading and writing.
At St Andrew's Cathedral School's Gawura campus our students:
- Are supported by a whole campus approach to the teaching of literacy.
- Are explicitly taught skills, knowledge and understandings in learning to learning about talking .and listening, reading and writing.
- Have the skills, knowledge and understandings of these three strands explicitly demonstrated to them daily.
- Have many opportunities for working with these skills, knowledge and understandings through guided and independent practice within their age appropriate stage.
- Are expected to use spoken and written language for a variety of meaningful purposes and audiences.
- Receive positive and constructive feedback.
- Are encouraged to take an active role in their learning, reflecting on progress made.
- Are provided with a bilingual approach to literacy activities.
