Overview
Name of the Campus
Gawura (pronounced ga-war-ah) is a word from the local Sydney language spoken in this area at the time of the first European settlement meaning “whale”. Suggested by our Redfern community consultation group, the word refers to the creature which is a totem of the Sydney region and has connotations in the Old Testament of the means by which God saved a nation.
A Site for Gawura
The campus is to cater for up to but not more than 25 boys and girls from Kindergarten to Year 6.
The students will access the facilities at St Andrew's Cathedral School such as (but not restricted to) the gymnasium, the Library, the Cathedral, Chapter House, Black Box Theatre, Kirrikee and St Andrew’s College Oval.
Local Governance
Through local governance and management, St Andrew's will encourage all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to learn by:
- Providing a climate that welcomes and values all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students;
- Establishing effective teaching and learning relationships between the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, their families and the educator; and
- Increasing the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people employed at the campus and increasing the involvement of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community and family members at the campus.
